GPS tracking used in FinnSpring 2010

10.4.2010

FinnSpring 2010 uses GPS tracking. On Saturday, the GPS system will be used in the qualification classes D21E and H21E2010, and on Sunday, in the classes H21A and H21E during the last relay leg. Both female and male participants in the elite class for qualification use a GPS transmitter. In addition, five GPS transmitters have been reserved for competitors, to be selected on site, prior to the competition. Most probably Marika Teini, representing Rasti-Lukko who has been successful in junior classes in international competitions, will be one of the competitors carrying a GPS transmitter.

It is possible to follow the GPS tracking both in the restaurant at the event centre and via the Internet at home. The GPS tracking also serves the audience who cannot attend the event. However, the maximum orienteering experience can only be gained on site.

Starting shot by ice-hockey legend and orienteerer Jorma Vehmanen

The starting shot for the main class relay will be launched by Jorma “Joppe” Vehmanen. We remember him as a talented attacker in ice-hockey arenas. From 1963-1983 representing Rauman Lukko and HJK, he played 570 matches and earned 544 power points and four times his team was among the top three in the national league. His skills in ice-hockey were also valued in seven world championship games and in two Olympic games.

Jorma “Joppe” Vehmanen has also several medals in orienteering at the national level, and his career continues. His club-mates know him as an active and uncomplicated person. In addition to the starting shot, he will be at the finish.

Pet farm brings joy to the youngest participants

The local 4H club will set up a pet farm near the kid’s park “Muksula”. There will at least be such pets as a cat and a dog, which of course are very common in many families. Depending on the weather conditions, also some bigger animals will possibly be present such as a goat, which requires a bit more space to keep compared to a dog or cat.

The pet farm will be located near the kids’ park. However, these two will be clearly separated to prevent any potential allergic reactions caused by animal contact.

While waiting for the trip to FinnSpring, check whether you can answer the following questions. If necessary, ask an adult to help you.
